With rare exceptions, our plants are container grown in sizes that perform consistently well in their target application. For herbaceous species, “large plugs” perform very well, are low in cost, and are easy to transport and install. Large plug containers are narrow but deep, holding 5.8 to 6.7 cubic inches of roots and media. Their narrow size makes them fast to plant, their depth makes them stay in place in erosion-prone situations, and their ample root mass allows explosive growth upon outplanting.
Most woody species are available in “tubeling” containers which hold 12 to 14 cubic inches of media. Most of these containers prune the plant’s roots to encourage branching which improves plant survival in difficult conditions. Shrub tubelings are a great way to increase species diversity of stream restorations. They spend the first year after planting developing their root systems, then explode with top growth the second year. Plants grown as large plugs or tubelings are removed from their containers and bagged into groups at the time of sale. This saves installers the hassle of disposing of or returning trays and drastically cuts your clean up time.
Most species are also available in gallons (trade or full). Gallon trees compete well against weeds and shrub gallons cover a lot of ground their first growing season.
