Riparian Shrubs

The native riparian vegetation that covers undisturbed stream banks performs many critical functions - bank stabalization, water quality improvement, and protection from temperature extremes. Riparian trees and shrubs also provide food and shelter for fish and wildlife, including the small benthic invertibrates that are the basis of the aquatic food chain. In order to perform these functions well, a vareity of locally native trees and shrubs are needed. The monoculture of black willow often found on "restored" eastern USA stream banks may provide short term stability and improve water quality, but it won't provide adequate habitat.

Coastal Plain Conservation Nursery, Inc. has the native riparian shrubs you need to provide fish, wildlife, and benthic invertibrate habitat. Available container sizes include large plugs and tubelings - readily installed through geotextiles - and one gallons, which are great for high visible areas and sites with lots of herbaceous competition. Our containerized shrubs can be installed throughout the cooler months, easing pressure on installation crews.

We also provide Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush), Cornus foemina and amomum (Stiff and Silky Dogwood), Sambucus canadensis (Elderberry), and Salix nigra and sericea (Black and Silky Willow), live stakes, brush mattresses and fascines during the cold winter months.
