Shoreline Erosion Control

In many sites marsh vegetation can be used to prevent shoreline erosion rather than hard structures such as bulkheads. In some cases, biodegradeable devices such as coir logs protect the marsh plants until they become established. In other higher energy sites, offshore "sills" of rock, oyster shells or wood are used to reduce the wave energy and allow the marsh plants to remain in place during intense storms. These "Living Shoreline" treatments provide food and shelter for many aquatic organisms including infant fish, capture sediment and sand, and remove pollutants. They are more attractive and often cost less than traditional bulkheads.

Coastal Plain Conservation Nursery, Inc. has the native freshwater and salt-tolerant marsh species you need to create beautiful living shorelines.
