Stormwater Wetlands
There are two zones to consider when planting a stormwater system, the shallow water zone and the temporary inundation zone.  The shallow water zone is permanently flooded to a depth of 0 – 6”.  The temporary inundation zone is only flooded for a couple of days after each storm, but since it only extends 0 - 12” above the permanent water level its soil is usually soggy. Only herbaceous (non-woody) plants should be planted in shallow water zones.   Temporary inundation zones can be planted either completely with herbaceous species (flowers and grass-like plants), or a mix of herbaceous and woody species (shrubs and trees).

The species you choose to install should be selected for compatibility with the water levels that will exist in each area of your design, the soil conditions at your site, fluctuations in hydrology, and the performance characteristics of the species you will use.  You should also select species that are native to your part of the state.
